It’s time. I have to talk to someone. I can’t function like this.

You may have heard your whole life that therapy is for “crazy people.” Or you may have pushed through social stigma and intermittently gone to therapy – but you know that if this is going to work, it’s going to take the right fit.

You’re a complicated person, and sometimes you feel like it might be hard to understand yourself. In many ways, you feel like you’re alone in the thoughts and feelings that you have.

How can you find a therapist who can connect to you on a cultural and social level while still actually being helpful? You’re not looking for a new bestie, but you don’t want to feel like a “patient.”

And then one of ‘those days’ comes along…

You’ve been flirting with the idea of talking to someone for some time now, typically when you have one of those days. You know, the days where it seems like no matter what you do, you can’t escape sadness, you can’t focus on anything, and your patience is non-existent.

Those are the days where you think that it might be best to try therapy. Even though you have people in your life, you don’t like to burden them – and you don’t like to show them this side of you.

But then, the fog lifts, and you forget about the idea of therapy – you’re okay, for now. But those days start to become a bit more frequent. Before you know it, it feels like this is just what your life has become.

You think to yourself, “That’s it. It’s time. I have to talk to someone. I can’t function like this.”

And you found Best Life

You Google search. You’re hoping that someone will stand out to you, that they’ll also be a woman, or have a queer identity, or be African American, or, hopefully, they’ll share your same faith.

You want some commonality to help you know that there’s at least some aspect of yourself that maybe you won’t have to explain – something to make this a bit more comfortable.

From the moment that you make the call and leave a voicemail, you’re nervous… unsure; you hope for a callback – as you waffle about whether you need therapy after all.

Finally, within the same day, you get a callback, and they sound… friendly! They get you in quickly, and the whole intake process is online – no printing, no spending 15 minutes of your first session to fill out paperwork. Okay, this might not be so bad.

Come in, take a seat, relax…

You arrive for your first session, and cool grey walls and home-like decor greet you as you walk through the private entrance to the suite. You immediately begin to feel some of the nerves melt. You have a seat in the waiting room, and shortly after, your therapist greets you– you know it’s the therapist because you read about them on their website (hi!).

You are guided into a therapy room, but it feels a lot like a living room with warm colors, cozy… not at all like being in a doctor’s office. This office feels comforting to you. Your therapist smiles at you and welcomes you…

And you take a deep breath, washing away the last bit of nerves… You might be able to do this. You just might have found the right fit.
